Maori is the language of the Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand, where it is one of the three official languages, besides English and New Zealand Sign language. Maori belongs to the Eastern Polynesian languages and is regarded by linguists as being closely related to Cook Islands Maori, Tuamotuan and Tahitian, less closely to Hawaiian and Marquesan, and even more distantly to the languages of Western Polynesia, including Samoan, Tokelauan, Niuean and Tongan. There are currently between 100,000 and 150,000 Maori speakers.
History of Maori language
•Legend has it that the Maori came to New Zealand from a mythical place called Hawaiki. Anthropologists believe they arrived around 1280 AD from Eastern Polynesia.
•Until the 19th century, their language and its dialects developed in isolation.
•Since about 1800, the Maori language has had quite a turbulent history.
•In the 1860s, with the arrival of traders from various ethnic backgrounds, missionaries, settlers and gold seekers, which mostly spoke English, Maori became a minority language.
•In the late 19th century, an English-style school system was introduced for all New Zealanders by the colonial governments of New Zealand and its provinces.
•From the 1880s it was even not allowed to use Maori in schools.
•In the late 1930s, the number of Maori speakers began to decline rapidly, as Maori members of New Zealand’s Parliament endured disadvantages because parliamentary proceedings took place in English.
•By the 1980s, Maori-language recovery-programs were started after Maori leaders realized the dangers of losing their language.
The Status quo of Maori
Maori is the now one of the three official language of New Zealand. There has been a continual increase in revitalization efforts of the Maori language since the 1960s. Many people have learnt Maori as a second language through universities, polytechnics, and other organizations.
