What is SDH (Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing)?
Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH) is a form of subtitles that originated in the United States. SDH needs to include as much original content as possible and doesn't simplify or dilute the original conversation. SDH combines the advantages of subtitles and closed captioning. SDH is suitable for audiences who are both deaf and hard of hearing and cannot understand the language spoken in the video. For example, if the video is English, then the audience speaks English also. Then SDH will be transcribed in English following the English SDH rule. Or if the video is in French and the audience speaks English, then SDH will translate from French to English and include all audible information.
The requirements and workflow of SDH when we handle it:
There are different rules for each language to follow, but the overall requirements are similar. Most of our customers require us to follow Netflix’s SDH rules. And SDH linguists need to follow the SDH rules when they doing the SDH. Usually we will find the exact language then follow that exact languages’ rule because of different languages with different rules. For example, if English SDH, then we need to choose the English language. Or some other languages, we need to choose others. Mostly SDH will be handled by professional linguists with more than 5 years’ SDH experience. After SDH has been done, our linguists will have a self-checking regarding all the requirements. A second editor will make the QC (quality check) based on the translation to ensure premium delivery. Then project manager will have a whole quality check to make sure of the final high quality. In most cases, the aspects we usually check include but are not limited to, Translation Accuracy, Shot Changes and Timing, Styling and Formatting, Spelling, Sound Indications, Rules or Instructions.
